Lyon-born director Frederic Planchon’s artistic roots took hold early. He began his career as a theatre actor followed by a run as an Assistant Director on 15 feature films. He made his directorial debut in 1990 with the short film L’Echange, which won the Prix de l’Image at the Festival de L’Image du Film, and soon after added music videos and commercials to his repertoire.Planchon’s signature style combines cinematic visuals and evocative performances. His piece “The Kiss” for Vodafone out of Grey London was embraced across media tastemakers, with Adweek pointing to its “grand cinematic style,” and was honored with a Film Craft Lion in Cannes. In 2014, Planchon premiered yet another moving spot for Vodafone, in which real cuts of home video provide a visceral visual to the heart-wrenching audio of a child’s emergency call, driving home the raw emotion conveyed during the crucial situation in a poignant way.
In another recent campaign for British electric company SSE via Adam&EveDDB, Planchon works a 100% photo-real CGI orangutan seamlessly into a live action environment, allowing us to discover the brilliance and of the modern human world through a whole new perspective.
Other campaigns for Chevy Silverado (Leo Burnett Detroit) and Google (Mullen Boston) have received attention. Creativity curated Google “Camping” as a Pick of the Day and Adweek featured several of spots from Chevy’s “A Man and His Truck” campaign as Spot of the Day. Throughout his career, Planchon’s work has received advertising’s most prestigious honors, including a D&AD Pencil for Best Direction on Vodafone’s “Time Theft” and a Silver Lion for Jeep’s “Treacherous Terrain,” along with British Arrows and AICP Honors.
He’s directed commercials for other global brands including Orange, Guinness, Mercedes, British Airways, Sony, Coca-Cola, American Airlines and VW, to note a few, and counts agencies such as BBH, Mother London, Publicis, DDB and DLKW, among those he’s collaborated with.
Planchon is attached to direct Await Your Reply, a drama about three strangers whose lives connect in unforeseen ways. The feature film is being adapted by award-winning novelist Dan Chaon from his own book and produced by Anonymous Content
