With the launch of its latest album, AuktYon, a Russian cult underground rock group, wanted to reach a new audience on a new platform: young people on their mobile devices. Two weeks before the official release, they previewed the album, “On the Sun,” online with one very clever caveat: the smartphone camera had to be focused on the sun for the tracks to play. For the first time the internet was the group’s main distribution channel and the album became the their most commercially successful release ever.
